Wow. I just got to try this today. My boy hunted two packs and settled on two keeper females, one that leans Sundae Driver, and one that leans White OG. Both are mindblowingly delicious. I don’t know if it was one of the two phenotypes or both, but I was still pretty damn high 5 hours later, which with my tolerance is pretty damned rare. According to the grower, both packs had stunning males and multiple potential keeper females, but when you’re an urban grower, you’ve gotta be really selective in deciding what to keep. Although he took a page out of my book and put the best three females and best three males together in a single tent to breed out hundreds or thousands of F2s with the best genetics from the original F1 generation. I don’t always have the space to do this, but when the mashup tent is empty, and I’ve just hunted a pack or two for the best of the best plants in relatively small population, they’ll all go in together for a breeding fun time party. I usually put the females in first, and then start the males a week later so they release their pollen in that two week time frame after the stretch that is prime pollination time, since males tend to release their pollen pretty early on. Although, the earliest males to drop their pollen usually won’t be the best, regardless of smell, density, or trichomes. Although honestly, I’ve found that males chosen for their stability and structure usually end up passing on the best traits, as opposed to males with really dense or sparkling, trichome covered flowers. There’s really no way to generalize hunting the best male genetics. It’s pretty much a waiting game of trying out the progeny of several males to find the best of the bunch. But there are those rare males that seem to have it all. Still, when I’ve seen the males lots of breeders use as their stud male for the majority of their genetics, I’m often not so impressed by his appearance. So yeah, with males, you’ve really got to try as many as possible to find the best for the traits you want them to pass on.
