I decided I’d change it up a bit and actually hunt a pack for the best plants, instead of popping a couple plants at a time from dozens of cultivars.
I didn’t go all the way. Only 10 were planted. 10/10 germination. I love to see that. Oni’s regular seeds are extremely reliable – and his feminized seeds are more reliable than a lot of a lot of feminized beans out there – but still not perfect. I usually get 4/5 or so with his feminized beans.
Anyway, I got seven females and only three males. I love female heavy packs.
I’ve gotten so many packs with 75%+ males, and usually when I’m not even looking for a male.
The males were like the three bears. There was runty, perfect hybrid, and scraping the male tent’s ceiling, lanky.
Only hybrid had enough traits I was looking for in pollen for storage and later experimentation
The females were no different. 7 plants. 7 different presentations. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t the F2 generation with all the variety.
There were Strawberry, Orange, Chai, Gas, Rubber, and Flaky Doughy Crust in a few of the wildly distinct plants, but the other 4 totally unrecognizable as actual sibling genotypes of each other, had somehow managed to develop completely original fat, pregnant with sweet nectar, trichome goodness.
The plants were flowered at only 16”-24” – normal for some, but I prefer to grow them as big as I can, while training her, coordinating the branching and nodal positions towards the lights, first pruning. Then, as I do with all indoor grown plants, I removed the bottom third of the plant’s branches and foliage, and lollipoped the middle branches and a few colas too.
One stretched 3x – the others less so, but totally randomly, and each one grew a bit or a lot.
They didn’t finish consistently – in fact, all were pulled on different days over a month.
I was trying to figure out where the 13 week phenotype came from. Although it wasn’t only the highest yielder at just short of 11 ounces, and from all seven plants, I got a really varied pound and a half, roughly.
I knew I could put the buds from the 3 expected terpene profiles together, but I separated out all the others. Two were floral as hell, one somehow got a heavy lemon scent and really thin leaves – possibly a Sour Diesel recessive trait. One smelled like jam and shit and could swear that there was Chem D in that plant.
And my tall girl? Popcorn Jelly Belly. Almost exactly! With the aftertaste and everything. Crazy. And only the 3 🍓 phenos and the shitty smelling strawberry jam plant were purple. The rest had bright lime buds.
My experience may not be that of everyone who grows these girls out. I may have gotten a mixed up pack accidentally. Not sure. But they were strange plants. I kept the lemon phenotype cut and the popcorn jelly belly headstash cut.
